What is Excluded From Iowa Public Records?

The state of Iowa is allowed to decide what should and should not be included in public records. Most states include any and all government information. However, when it comes to the people and the businesses within the state, Iowa public records have to weigh whether or not that is considered a breach of privacy. In most cases the data is released, however in some cases Iowa public records will exclude the information, on the grounds that they are not a matter for the public. Some of this information includes:

  • Social Security Numbers - Your personal social security number is not a matter of public concern. Releasing it would only put you at danger, so the government keeps them private.
  • Medical Histories - While medical statistics may be eligible, individual medical histories are also a private matter, and not one that is relevant to the public at large.
  • Trade Secrets - The state wants to support its businesses, so Iowa public records do not contain any trade secrets that, if released, may harm a company by improving competition.
  • You can find a great deal of information within Iowa public records, but not every piece of data is included, especially if it is clear that data is not relevant to the public.
